**Warning – Spoilers ahead**
Netflix viewers have a new mystery to ride along with in horror series, Archive 81, and questions are already being asked about its ambiguous key players.
Our focus is the company mentioned in the series, Wellspring, and we explain what the organization entails and confirm whether it’s real or not.
Based on a podcast of the same name and developed for Netflix by Rebecca Sonnenshine, Paul Harris Boardman, and James Wan, Archive 81 was released on January 14, 2022, and stars Mamoudou Athie, Dina Shihabi, Evan Jonigkeit, Julie Chan, and more. The narrative follows a group of researchers aiming to restore a pile of damaged tapes with sinister connections to shady corporations.
What is Wellspring?
In order to perfectly establish the eerieness of the company, Wellspring is introduced in the series through a pre-existing commercial.
The advertisement promotes the organization’s DNA testing, where customers can send in a sample of their DNA to take part in ancestry testing.
Founded by Virgil Davenport in 2006, viewers quickly learn that Wellspring is a front for the higher organization, LMG, in order to provide access to many human samples.
This has all been orchestrated so that LMG has an advantage in searching for individuals who carry magical blood.
Is the company’s DNA testing real?
In short, Wellspring is not a real company in the non-fiction world.
Archive 81 explains that the company was lying dormant in the show’s narrative, but the samples the program collected over the years allowed LMG to access them.
The DNA ancestry testing, however, is a real, operational program in our world, where anybody can send in a sample of their DNA in order to find out who their ancestors are, whether they are still living or not.
Where was Archive 81 filmed?
A majority of Archive 81 was filmed in the American state of Pennsylvania, primarily in and around the city of Pennsylvania in Allegheny County.
The show’s plot is set in New York City but Pennsylvania was used to fill in for the bustling city to keep budget costs low.
Furthermore, the borough of Millvale was visited, including the Mr. Smalls Theatre and the Marshall Township, where filming was carried out on soundstages.
