Thanks to a DNA sample, Ottawa police have laid a charge nearly 14 years after an alleged sexual assault near Walkley Road and St. Laurent Boulevard.

In April 2006, a teenage girl was walking alone in the Dakota Avenue-Carnegie Street area when she was sexually assaulted by a man she didn’t know, police said.

“Recently, DNA sample led to the identification of a suspect,” the Ottawa Police Service announced Friday.

A 53-year-old man from Smiths Falls has been charged with one count of sexual assault. He was to appear in court on Friday.

Investigators believe there could be other victims and ask anyone with information to call 613-236-1222 ext. 5760 or email mcm@ottawapolice.ca
