DNA

The use of Genealogical DNA has solved many decades-old crimes, and put rapists and murderers in prison. But, this time it has freed a man from prison.

In This Podcast:  Troy Larson, author of the on-line tale of his family history,  “So Many Secrets,” and  “Ghosts of North Dakota.” He’s a co-worker and friend.

Troy has a strong interest in Genealogical DNA.  He closely and painstakingly researches such cases and has spoken with us previously on this subject.

He takes a stab at The Zodiac Killer in the spring 2019  podcast.

Here’s how Troy explained it on Facebook the other day:

“If you watched “The Wrong Man” on Starz, you’re familiar with Christopher Tapp’s story. He made a false confession to a rape and murder he didn’t commit. Even after it was clear he had not committed the crime, the authorities refused to admit he was innocent. He served 20 years of a 30 year sentence and was denied post-conviction relief 5 times, even after it was revealed his DNA did not match the DNA of the perpetrator. They’ve known he was innocent since at least 2017, but did not exonerate him until yesterday. Genealogical DNA helped clear him, and the actual perpetrator was arrested in May. As my friend Jack Sunday said “Genetic genealogy exonerates, too.'”

We also get into another cold-case.  This one, also an Idaho story, involves the death of two brothers in the Firth Idaho River Bottoms

The Annett  murders happened in 1988, and after having read of it, Troy is convinced that it would be a perfect fit for a G-DNA investigation.
