HENDERSON, Ky. – Imagine that you’ve heard a story told at family gatherings, about how your great-great-grandfather was a decorated hero in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Or maybe you’ve heard your ancestors came over on a boat as poor immigrants, starting a new life, before moving west in the newly expanding U.S. What country did they come from and where did they end up?

Or perhaps you know your roots are in Africa, but you aren’t sure what part.

How do you get started on the genealogical search that will yield the facts you need?

The Henderson County Public Library would like to help by giving free DNA tests to four lucky people. And in turn, using those results and what they turn up to help others here as they learn how to research their own family backgrounds.

How to apply?

“This project is open to four individuals who have never taken a DNA test but would be interesting in learning more,” according to the library’s Nancy Voyles, who is the genealogy and local history manager.

“It will require a commitment of time to work with genealogists at the Henderson County Public Library as you are assisted with interpreting your DNA results.”

Applications will be reviewed by library staff and chosen based on factors such as willingness to share with other library patrons and a high likelihood that a DNA test would positively impact the individual’s personal genealogical journey.

“At the end of the research program, the participants will share their findings in a program for other genealogists.”

For those who are chosen, an Ancestry.com DNA kit will be provided at no charge.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants must be 18 to apply
  • Applications are available at the library, and are due on Monday, Dec. 2.
  • Applications will be reviewed by library staff and four applicants will be notified by Monday, Dec. 16.
  • Applicants must be available to attend a class on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m.
  • For more information or to apply, visit the Henderson County Public Library at 101 S. Main St. or call 270-826-3712.
