What to do about fare enforcement? According to a Seattle Times report, fare enforcement on the light rail disproportionately impacts people of color. Only 9 percent of riders are black, but 22 percent of the people who were fare enforced were black. After your first warning for not paying, fare enforcement officers will give you a $124 ticket. If you get caught not paying more times, you can get charged with a misdemeanor for theft. Black riders accounted for “43% of tickets and 57% of theft cases over four years.” These disparities have people questioning whether fare enforcement should even exist.
Retirement-home shooting: An 80-year-old resident of Vancouver, Washington’s Smith Tower, a retirement home not the Seattle skyscraper, opened fire in the lobby. One person was declared dead on the scene, two others were shot and transported to the hospital.
Cold case almost closed: My favorite trend these days is DNA genealogy companies helping to bust criminals who thought they’d gotten away with murder. After almost 30 years, a 55-year-old King County man was charged in the 1991 murder of 16-year-old Sarah Yarborough. A DNA genealogy company contracted by the King County Sheriff’s Office pointed them toward the suspect. Deputies surveilled him and collected DNA off his cigarette butts. He’s now in custody on $5 million bail.
If your morning commute sucked: This could be why. A semitruck was on fire in the express lanes at Mercer Street. The fire has been put out, but state troopers say that the express lanes will be closed during the morning commute.
Trump denies quid pro quo: And yet, text messages from his envoys made it clear that they definitely thought this was a “if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” kind of dealio with Ukraine. Where a White House visit and the nearly $400 million in military aid Trump was holding hostage from the country were the payoffs—the back scratches, if you will. These texts were given to three Democratic-led committees, and they will provide a timeline and a roadmap that could shape the impeachment inquiry and further investigations, according to the New York Times.
Seattle couple finally reunited: It has taken four years for this Iranian woman to be allowed into the United States to be reunited with her husband, a tech worker in Seattle. For four years, they were separated because of Trump’s travel ban. They would video chat constantly. He would visit her for weeks in Tehran. But finally she got a visa.
The Seahawks had a crazy game last night: Or so I heard on the phone afterward from my very hoarse boyfriend. The Seahawks beat the Rams in a narrow 30–29 win in Seattle last night. It ended with the Rams kicker missing a field goal with 11 seconds to go. Russell Wilson, the Seahawks quarterback, threw four touchdown passes. He has also yet to throw an interception this NFL season. This is how Pete Carroll felt:
I mean, even I can appreciate this: Check out this Tyler Lockett touchdown.
US attorney general doesn’t want WhatsApp to be 100 percent private: William Barr has asked Facebook to consider not making WhatsApp messages totally encrypted. Or, if they do, to provide a loophole. Facebook politely said, “Thanks, but no thanks.” And, hypocritically maybe, said that people deserve privacy. Do they, Facebook?! Interesting of you to say that now, after the multitudes of privacy betraying you did, like, say, selling all of our data to Cambridge Analytica.
How much do you want to bet that Eric Trump doesn’t know Marcus Aurelius is a real person? In an article, Eric Trump quoted Marcus Aurelius “from The Gladiator.”
Washington, DC, has dolphins? There are about a thousand dolphins in the Potomac River. That’s fucking me up. They’re bottlenose dolphins, too! Apparently, before the 1960s, there had been dolphins in the river, but pollution and trash ruined the river’s ecosystem. Now, after years of intervention and pollution control, the dolphins are back, baby!
Rick Perry is leaving the Energy Department: In December, probably. A source leaked that Perry, who was a glutton for fossil fuels and did nothing to help the environment, will be stepping down from his role as energy secretary. His most recent project was promoting oil and natural-gas exports in Ukraine of all places.
Would you take this class? It’s to stop you from cheating, apparently.
Headline of the week: “Microsoft Used Machine Learning to Make a Bot That Comments on News Articles for Some Reason.” Okay, which one of you commenters is the Microsoft bot? Let’s suss this out.
Orioles apologize for having the worst record in baseball history: They sent handwritten thank-you cards to their fans after a 108-loss season.
A fun fact for your Friday: Is this the longest ever marathon time?
